Some of you might be asking yourself, "what in the world does Babushka and Beggins mean??? Maddie has completely gone off her rocker!" Well, I promise there is a method to my madness. When I decided to create a blog my biggest worry was creating a name. I didn't want something that focused only on being a new wife, my hobbies, or my interests. I wanted some unique and had a ring to it. I began to think about what is most important to me, family. My family has so many qualities that I love and I wanted to honor them through this blog. So here we go:
Babushka~ On my dad's side I am part Serbian. I have always felt a spiritual connection to my ancestry on this side and a curiosity to its culture. A babushka is a traditional headscarf worn by elderly women throughout Europe, primarily Russia and Serbian countries. Its literal meaning is "grandmother" or "elderly woman." Also, it is a name used for Matryoshka (Russian stacking) dolls. I first heard this word from my grandma and she has taught me many Serbian phrases throughout my life. As a child I loved saying this word and became obsessed with my babushka dolls and still love them! This simple word allows me to feel a connection with my culture and a special bond between my own babushka and myself.
Beggins~ When I would visit my Nana's (my mom's mom) house sometimes there would be a mysterious present left for me with no tags to whom the gift was given by. I would be so excited when these gifts were left from a surprise visitor! His name was Mr. Beggins, a fictional character made up by my Nana to spoil her grandchildren. I was fascinated by his cunning ability to leave presents with such haste and swiftly disappear without my knowledge of his presence. He became part of the family and to this day we still receive presents left by Mr. Beggins. He is a reminder of my Nana's love and her ever-present spirit in my life.
There you have it! The reasoning behind such a weird name. I hope you enjoy its meaning and I'll talk to you soon.
I love you!
Maddie
